The next day we were invited to the funeral of an eighty four-year-old woman. She was going to be cremated along with the bones of her husband who had died years before. In Bali the spirit is thought to linger until cremation releases it, so if one is buried the spirit may stay with the family until cremation.

The body was loaded into a woven palm-frond basket and carried to the cremation site on the shoulders of her four grandsons, who dipped and wove and turned in circles in an effort to confuse any evil spirits or ghosts that were attracted to the body.

When the cremation pyre was reached the body was placed in an ornate tower while a gamelan band played. She was surrounded by her belongings and gifts for the journey. Food, jewelry, teacups, fabric and a Hello Kitty purse were all piled on the pyre. A suckling pig and other food was prepared; the Balinese believe that the spirits consume the essence of the offerings but that the physical offering may be eaten by the living.

Again, we were welcomed with open arms to the party-

like gathering. Everyone was having their photo taken in front of the pyre. Grandmother, four days dead in ninety- degree heat, was blessed by the priest and the gifts brought by others were given to her one by one. Live birds were released to fly the prayers to heaven.

Then the gifts were removed and the pyre lit. It was an amazing sight and smell to experience. Grandmother’s body slipped part way through the cremation and she ended up with her feet pointing straight up. We were appalled and worried, but it was greeted with laughter by the family. The whole festivity was a joyful one as tears are thought to encourage the ghost to linger.
